Kodak: Lighting Dances With Wolves
Dean Semler (Road Warrior, City Slickers, Dead Calm) demonstrates the techniques that won him an Academy Award for the cinematography of "Dances With Wolves." Deans background in documentary films is a major influence on his visuals. This workshop recreates the lighting of an interior fireside scene from "Wolves", using an exact replica of the teepee set. The workshop footage was shot anamorphical, using a Panavision camera and a crane.

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS Dean discusses and demonstrates: wide screen composition, relationship between lighting design and coverage and the best use of high speed film stocks in low light situations.

Kodak: Lighting Dead Poets Society
John Seale (Rainman, Gorillas in the Mist, Witness) conducts an intensive and inspirational lighting workshop in the studios of the Australian Film, Radio and Television School. The dormitory set from "Dead Poets Society" was painstakingly reconstructed for this workshop. Even more important than the technical knowledge it contains is the insight this program gives into Seales working philosophy.
PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS Seale guides the students and our camera through the lighting setups he used for summer, for winter, for night and for day. Tricks and techniques are divulged which he uses to achieve extremely difficult effects while maximizing the num.

Two internationally renowned cinematographers light the same shots from the same dramatic script in this back-to-back workshop. Don McAlpine ( Patriot Games, Breaker Morant and My Brilliant Career ) and Denis Lenoir ( Monsieur Hire, Clear and Present Danger and Mrs. Doubtfire ) vividly demonstrate how differences in creative style and approach affect the impact and tone of the scene. This program is packed with technical information, demonstrations & insights into the role of the cinematographer.

Location lighting, utilizing the equipment one truck can carry, is the most common task a young cinematographer will face. Geoff Burton ( The Year My Voice Broke, Flirting, Wide Sargasso Sea ) condenses his many years of location lighting experience in this highly practical and useful workshop. Geoffs approach emphasizes maximum use of natural lighting resources ( daylight and practical ) and imitating these sources with the light he adds. Geoff shows how to work with the limitations of locations space and design ( in this case three rooms of a cramped apartment ) rather than against them. He demonstrates how fast stocks and fast work can be critical to success.

Kodak: Shooting For Realism With Allen Daviau & Sacha Vierny
Allan Daviau ( E.T., The Color Purple, Empire Of The Sun ) and Sacha Vierny ( Hiroshima mon Amour; The Cook, The Thief, His Wife and Her Lover, Prosperos Books ) are given the same script and set. Daviau creates a series of intricate setups, clearly explaining each problem he encounters and the solutions he finds by using filters, lights and F-stops changes. Vierny experiments with a simple and elegant camera move that encompasses much of the action but presents him with a new challenge: hiding the dolly track. Computer graphics of the lighting setups as well as side-by-side comparisons of the finished scenes help you to better understand the techniques and appreciate the results.

Kodak: Shooting For Drama With Robby Muller & Peter James
Robby Mullers credits include Repo Man, Paris Texas, To Live and Die in L.A., Peter James Shot Alive!, Rich in Love and Driving Miss Daisy. Both were given the same script and set constraints. The beautiful images they created reflect their different backgrounds and philosophies on the art the business of filmmaking. Muller creates a moody and impressionistic feel that is characteristic of his approach. James on the other hand neatly sidesteps the problems caused by cyc too close to the set and creates a wider view of the windswept dusty cafe. Both men prove to be generous teachers, sharing many creative and technical insights that come from years behind the camera. The video culminates with a split screen comparisons of each cinematographers finished piece.

Kodak: Shooting For Fantasy With Sacha Vierney & Denis Lenoir
French cinematographer Denis Lenoir ( Monsieur Hire, Paris Awakes, Shuttlecock Zone ) and Sacha Vierny ( Hiroshima Mon, Amour, Prosperos Books, Stavisky ) explorethe world of cinematic fantasy and magic. Vierny generously shares one of his special secrets, shoeing how to create a magical beam of light without the usual need for a smoked filled room. The effect is electric. Lenoir takes you through each step of his lighting design and also gives invaluable information about the use of fluorescent lights. This program explores the techniques that make magic on the screen, but more importantly the cinematographers creative thought process behind the magic.
PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS Lenoir demonstrates the ability of one special effect to hide another and how to combine several effects to create magic.

Kodak: Shooting For Black & White With Allen Daviau & Denis Lenoir
Allen Daviau ( The Falcon and The Snowman, Avalon, Bugsy, Twilight Zone, The Color Purple ) takes students back to the golden age of cinematography - the 1920s. He painstakingly recreates the shooting style by employing the filtration, vignetting, aspect ratios and shot coverage of the period. In doing so he evokes the spirit and dynamic of the B&W silent screen masterpieces. Denis Lenoir ( Monsieur Hire, Daddy Nostalgie / These Fooling Things, Paris Awakes Shuttlecock ) creates an intriguing comparison to the work of Daviau by using modern cinematic techniques featuring a moving camera. He shoots with both color and B&W stock to make the comparison complete.

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS As well as being a storehouse of practical information, this program is an ode to the haunting beauty of black and white cinematography and a wonderful essay on the changing art of the cinematographer from the 1920s to the present day.

FXphd AFX215 – After Effects Compositing for Project Arbiter

Mark Christiansen, author of Adobe After Effects CS5 Visual Effects and Compositing Studio Techniques, returns for a new project-based course featuring composting and effects for PROJECT ARBITER. The short concept film, currently in post production, was shot with 2 RED cameras and fxphd members will be able to work through several shots on the film, potentially even having their shot find a place in the final release and their name featured in the credits. In addition, for April term members, there will be a small invite-only “Special Ops” group which will work through other shots on the film. Members will apply for Special-Ops by submitting a demo reel, CV, and a time commitment to work on the project. Details on applying will be provided to fxphd members.

Because this is a project-based course the week-by-week structure is subject to change. The type of shots Christiansen will be working on run the gamut of the type of shots an artist would see on a sci-fi action film. From rig removal to matte paintings, cgi multi-pass to bullet hits, blood splatters, and explosions. In addition to the classes, the course will also include a general challenge with an online interactive review session for the participants. Even if you don’t use After Effects for compositing, you’re sure to get a ton of useful information.
fxphd is excited to be involved in this project as it will give fxphd members great material to learn from as well as a chance to have their work make it into a final release. PROJECT ARBITER, scheduled for release in Q4 2011, is a sci-fi espionage story about Special Fields Op. Captain Joseph Colburn who has been tasked with infiltrating a Nazi villa on the Polish border to discover its mysterious operations. The film was written and directed by Michael Chance, who has an efficient eye for independent filmmaking – creating high-production value projects at a fraction of what it would cost a studio to produce.
As PROJECT ARBITER is a visual effects heavy film, Michael has Visual Effects Supervisor Jesse Boots overseeing all the details. Boots is a visual effects specialist at Ntropic in San Francisco (Underworld, Grindhouse) where he’s worked on numerous projects as an editor and VFX artist. Boots will be collaborating closely with Christiansen and the Special Ops team during the term.

Class 1:
Pull a challenging blue screen key with Keylight. Set the elements in place for skydiving comp: camera animation, atmospheric haze and clouds, basic spill and color correction.

Class 2:
We remove a chain towing a tank – smart ways to break down complex roto and incorporate the tracker and mocha AE.

Class 3:
Sky replacement and plate cleanup on this long shot of a jeep driving off into the sunset.

Class 4:
Blood and bullet hit effects for two unfortunate soldiers.

Class 5:
The driving shot: roto and lighting for a realistic comp.

Class 6:
Sky replacement and creating a smoke element.

Class 8:
Creating muzzle flashes for firing guns.

Class 9:
Animating fluid in 2D.

Class 10:
Some tricky compositing and a few final tips.

It's The Italian Job so obviously, I head to Kent in England for the race of a lifetime. But first I have to get ready. So, it's the Fiorano test track in Italy where I spend a while not getting ready at all. I try the gym but it's all rubbish so instead, I decide to compare Ferrari's 458 Italia and the limited edition 599 GTO. On paper, that doesn't seem fair.

But in reality.. Next stop is the infamous Imola race circuit. The Stig joins me to get the most out of the Porsche GT3 and its stripped out cousin the GT3 RS. Also present are the Lamborghini Gallardo LP570-4 Superleggera and the jaw-dropping Mercedes SLS AMG with its gullwing doors. My face gets a workout too, thanks to an Ariel Atom. With a V8 engine. Then, for some reason, The Stig does something terrible to the face of Rubens Barrichello. My final Italian shake-down comes from the L1.3 million, Nurburgring lap record holder - the Zonda R with its 750 horsepower V12 and slick tyres. Finally, I'm ready. So it's back to England for my first ever Classic Touring Car Race.I don't know the car, I don't know the circuit and I'm up against 20 experienced rivals.What could possibly go wrong?
