MARI allows artists to concentrate on painting detailed, multi-layered textures directly onto 3D models in a fluid and natural way. MARI was originally conceived at Weta Digital, because no existing commercial product could handle the complex, highly detailed look development work required by films such as District 9 and Avatar.

MARI has been designed by artists to give them immediate feedback, in context, working with multiple interacting models from any angle and in animated motion. MARI’s responsive creative toolset allows painting to be completed in a single application, reducing the need to export, paint in 2D and re-import.

This collection of tutorials shows artists how to create an eye-catching motion graphics spot using 3ds Max and After Effects. In this training you will learn from several Digital-Tutors instructors, each of whom will be guiding you through a portion of the entire production pipeline used to create our final motion graphics piece.
We will begin by exploring many of the powerful modeling tools found in 3ds Max, and utilizing these tools to build our 3D motion graphics elements. From there, we will look at a number of animation tools and features that will allow us to quickly add movement and life to our 3ds Max elements. From there, we will learn how to incorporate dynamic elements such as flowing cloth, smoke, and sparks into our scene. Finally, we will learn how to render out our elements from 3ds Max, and utilize After Effects for final compositing and sweetening of our motion graphics spot.

I’m back in Chicago from NAB and hitting the ground running with course work for the new term. Sunday afternoon, designer Mark Ward visited the fxphd studios to film the first class for our new After Effects project-based course, afx211. He’s a long time friend and incredibly talented designer who came up with the concept boards for the project. The first class examines the design process on jobs such as this.

The goal for this course is to work through a broadcast design project and in our case, it’s the opening of a new mock reality show called “The Next FX Master”. Basically, Top Chef for visual effects artists. We’re going on set later this week to film both the material for the course as well as behind the scenes tutorials on various aspects of being the vfx supervisor. Throughout the term, we’ll be distributing high quality 720P material so that members can make the open their own and have something great for their reel. It’s gonna be a blast!
